Description

Lantana camara is a shrub native to Mexico, Central America and South America. Its fragrant flowers change colour as they mature.

It is used worldwide as an ornamental plant for its vivid colours, but is included in the list of the world’s 100 most harmful invasive alien species because of its adaptability, rapid growth and resistance to fire.

This plant has other curious names, such as "5 Negritos" and "Bandera Española".

Appearance: Clear liquid, light yellow to dark yellow

Solubility: Insoluble in water, soluble in oil

Precautions

Must not be used by pregnant women or children. May cause skin irritation; use with care and always diluted.

Do not apply directly to the skin; dilute in a carrier oil or follow the recommended usage level for creams and other types of cosmetics.

Taxonomy

Botanical name: Lantana camara - Family: Verbenaceae - Genus: Lantana

It is considered an invasive species in many tropical areas and has covered large areas of India, as well as Australia and much of Africa. It colonises new areas when its seeds are dispersed by birds. Once it reaches an area, it spreads so rapidly that attempts to eradicate it have failed completely. It is fire-resistant and grows quickly, colonising burnt areas. It has become a serious obstacle to the natural regeneration of important native species, including Sal (Shorea robusta) in south-east Asia, as well as various plant species in another 22 countries. In greenhouses, it is notorious for attracting whitefly. Although considered a pest in Australia, it offers native marsupial species shelter from predators and provides a habitat for vulnerable groups of native bees that nest inside its stems. In South Africa, planting it in gardens has been banned to prevent its excessive spread. Ingestion of the plant is harmful to animals. The berries are edible when ripe, although, like many other fruits, they are mildly poisonous to humans and livestock while still green. It has been listed as a "toxic invasive species" in Florida and poses a threat in Texas and Hawaii. In the Galápagos Islands, it is considered an invasive species and considerable efforts are being made to eradicate it.Information excerpt from https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lantana_camara
