Description

Dathelo oil from Nepal is highly valued in cosmetics and hair care for its distinctive profile of fatty acids, flavonoids, vitamins and other bioactive compounds. Extracted from the seeds of the Dathelo fruit, a plant native to high altitudes in the Himalayas, this oil is used topically on both skin and hair. Hair care is its most common and appreciated use because it repairs and nourishes hair, provides shine and soothes the scalp.

Dathelo oil contains a high concentration of unsaturated fatty acids, mainly oleic acid (omega-9), linoleic acid (omega-6) and alpha-linolenic acid (omega-3). These fatty acids are essential for maintaining the skin and hair's lipid barrier, reducing transepidermal water loss and protecting against external damage. Its fatty acid profile makes it particularly effective as an emollient, moisturising and regenerating ingredient in cosmetics.

Bioactive Compounds

The oil is also rich in flavonoids and other polyphenols, which act as powerful antioxidants, helping combat oxidative stress in skin and hair. These compounds contribute to protection against UV rays and other environmental factors, improving overall skin health and promoting hair elasticity and softness.

Use in Hair Care

Dathelo oil is highly beneficial for hair, particularly hair affected by dryness, heat damage or chemical exposure. Applying it directly to the hair restores the natural lipid layer that can be lost through frequent washing or harsh products. This improves texture and shine, increases resistance to breakage and reduces frizz.

Cosmetic Applications

Beyond hair care, Dathelo oil is used in creams, lotions and other skin care products for its moisturising and anti-inflammatory properties. It helps soften the skin, reduce inflammation and improve moisture retention, making it ideal for dry or mature skin products.

Recommendations for Use

Dathelo oil can be mixed with other ingredients native to the region, such as amla, bhringraj and neem, traditionally used to strengthen hair, reduce dandruff and promote growth. These can provide:

  • Damaged Hair Repair:
Oils such as Dhatelo are known for their deeply moisturising properties, helping repair split ends and reduce breakage.
  • Hair Growth Support:
Ingredients such as bhringraj and amla are traditionally believed to stimulate growth and reduce hair loss.
  • Scalp Health:
Many Nepalese hair oils have antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, helping maintain a healthy scalp and prevent dandruff.

Example Use: Simple Regenerating Hair Mask

The following recipe is designed to nourish hair deeply, promote growth and maintain a healthy scalp.

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons of Organic Dhatelo Oil.
  • 1 tablespoon of amla powder.
  • 1 tablespoon of bhringraj powder.
  • 1 tablespoon of neem powder.
  • 2-3 tablespoons of hot water (to form a paste).

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Herbs:
In a small bowl, mix the amla, bhringraj and neem powders with the hot water. Stir well to form a smooth, even paste. Leave for about 5-10 minutes to allow the herbs to release their properties.
  2. Add the Oil:
Add the Dhatelo oil to the herbal paste and mix well. Ensure that the oil is fully incorporated into the mixture.
  3. Apply:
Apply the mixture to the scalp and hair, covering from roots to ends. Gently massage the scalp for about 5-10 minutes to stimulate blood circulation and help the nutrients penetrate.
  4. Leave On:
Leave the mixture on the hair for at least 30 minutes. For a deeper treatment, cover the hair with a warm towel or shower cap and leave for up to 1-2 hours.
  5. Rinse:
Wash with a mild shampoo, preferably sulphate-free, to remove the mixture completely. Rinse thoroughly so no herbal residue remains.

Benefits:

  • Dhatelo Oil: Provides intensive hydration and repairs damaged hair, adding shine and softness.
  • Amla: Rich in vitamin C and antioxidants, it helps strengthen hair and promotes growth.
  • Bhringraj: Known as the “king of hair” in Ayurveda, it is effective in preventing hair loss and stimulating growth.
  • Neem: Its antimicrobial properties help maintain a healthy scalp, preventing dandruff and other infections.

This treatment is ideal once a week to maintain healthy, strong, shiny hair.

Taxonomy

Botanical name: Prinsepia utilis - Family: Rosaceae - Genus: Prinsepia

Dhatelo (Prinsepia utilis) is a shrub or small tree in the Rosaceae family, native to the mountainous regions of the Himalayas, particularly Nepal. This shrub generally reaches between 2 and 5 metres in height. Its leaves are lanceolate, dark green, alternate and smooth in texture, with slightly toothed edges. In spring, Dhatelo produces small white or pink flowers that grow in fragrant clusters. The fruits are small drupes, reddish-brown when ripe, each containing a single seed. This tree is found at altitudes ranging from 2000 to 3500 metres above sea level, in open areas and at forest edges in Nepal’s mountainous regions.
