Description
Nicotinamide, also known as niacinamide, is the active, water-soluble form of vitamin B3. It has been extensively studied in dermatology, but further research is needed to clarify its value. Nicotinamide has been incorporated into many topical agents, including sunscreens and cosmetic agents.Nicotinamide, available in topical creams and gels, has been shown to be effective at eliminating acne. In a controlled clinical trial, 4% nicotinamide gel was found to be as effective as the topical antibiotic.
The clinical signs and symptoms of rosacea include increased facial skin dryness, redness and sensitivity. In at least two studies, moisturisers containing nicotinamide have been shown to improve skin barrier function in patients with rosacea, reducing reactions to irritants, including cleansers and cosmetics.
In multiple clinical studies, topical nicotinamide improved fine lines and wrinkles, hyperpigmented spots, red patches and sallowness (yellowing), as well as elasticity. One study showed that nicotinamide increases the production of ceramides in the skin, which are natural emollients and skin protectants, thereby improving hydration.
