- PLANT:
Milk thistle, Silybum marianum, also popularly known as Cardo borriquero, is a biennial plant very common in Europe that belongs to the Compositae family.
This plant reaches two metres in height, has a sturdy stem and a characteristic flower head (like that of an artichoke), with a rosette of leaves and flowers in purple and pink shades.
- COMPOSITION:
Its main components include between 1.5 and 3% silymarin and its isomers silybin, silydianin and silychristin; flavonoids such as quercetin, taxifolin, apigenin, luteolin and dehydrokaempferol B; vitamins C, E and K; lipids and other substances.
- COSMETIC PROPERTIES AND USES:
A decoction of milk thistle fruits produces a liquid to be applied externally with compresses or instillations in cases of nosebleeds and minor bleeding.
Its use in rubs and sitz baths for venous problems, such as haemorrhoids or varicose veins, is also worth considering.
It is used in cosmetics, is also a good protective agent against insect bites and even snakebites, and is used to treat oily and irritated skin. Dressings soaked in its infusion can also be applied to affected areas to treat ulcers and sores. This preparation can also be used to wash a wound.
