Hydrolates are the water resulting from essential oil distillation. They consist of 99% water, with the remaining 1% containing a small proportion of the components of the distilled essential oil.

Hydrolates are often confused with waters, mainly because in other countries they are called Floral Waters. Waters contain preservatives and may be natural and/or synthetic, whereas a Hydrolate has no preservatives. Hydrolates cost more and, because they contain no preservatives, have a much shorter shelf life (from 6 months to a year) compared with a Water.

Microfiltered: what does it mean?

The greatest enemy of hydrolates is fermentation caused by contamination.
Traditional distillation methods inevitably allow small fragments of plant material to enter, so filtering as soon as possible is important. A membrane device can filter out microscopic bacteria, fungi, yeasts and plant remains, leaving a completely clean hydrolate.

Mi Cosmética Casera's Microfiltered series offers assurance of scent, aroma and shelf life without adding preservatives. The process is carried out cold, so none of the hydrolate's properties are lost.
