Description

Rosemary Extract 10% Carnosic Acid

A highly concentrated, oil-soluble botanical antioxidant with a minimum carnosic acid content of 10%. It is intended to protect oils, butters, balms, oleogels, emulsions with an oil phase and other lipid matrices against oxidative rancidity.

Its main purpose is not to act on the scalp or as an anti-dandruff active ingredient, but to function as an antioxidant for the oil phase in formulation. Compared with rosemary extracts heavily diluted in glycol carriers, this oil-carrier format, standardised to 10%, allows low usage rates and better calculation of antioxidant protection for the oil phase.

Benefits and uses

  • Helps delay the oxidation and rancidity of oils and fats.
  • Of particular interest in sensitive vegetable oils, oil blends, balms, butters, oleogels and emulsions with a high oil-phase content.
  • Provides carnosic acid, a phenolic diterpene from rosemary with high antioxidant activity.
  • May be combined with tocopherols to strengthen the oil phase's antioxidant system.

Use in formulation

  • Suggested starting usage rate: 0,05% - 0,3% of the oil phase. Always adjust through stability and odour/colour testing.
  • Solubility: oil-soluble/dispersible in oils thanks to its oil carrier.
  • Addition stage: oil phase, preferably with gentle stirring and avoiding aeration.
  • Temperature: incorporate while warm or during cooling where possible; avoid prolonged heating.
  • May slightly alter colour and odour in very delicate formulas, so preliminary testing is advisable.

Suggested application examples - Rosemary 10% Carnosic Acid

  • Vegetable oils and oil blends: 0,05% - 0,3% to help prevent premature rancidity of the oil phase.
  • Balms, butters and oleogels: preferably incorporate during cooling, below 40 C where possible, to reduce heat exposure.
  • Oil macerates: may be added as an antioxidant formulation aid to improve the protection of sensitive oils.
  • Emulsions with an oil phase: add to the oil phase or during cooling if the process allows, validating stability and odour/colour.
  • Combination with vitamin E: may be combined with tocopherols to strengthen the antioxidant strategy for oils and fats.

Its main function is to protect oils and fats against oxidation; it is not an antimicrobial preservative and does not replace a preservative in formulas containing water. It may impart a slight tint or odour, so it must first be tested in delicate or very pale products.
