Description
- PLANT:
Thyme, Thymus vulgaris, is a plant grown exclusively as an aromatic herb. It belongs to the Labiatae group and can grow to only 30 cm in length. Its stem is thin and greyish, its leaves are short and oval, and its flowers are violet, pink or white and arranged in compact groups.
It originates from areas of the western Mediterranean, specifically Europe, Asia, North Africa and Greenland, although it is characteristic of southern Europe and grows in dry, very sunny meadows. It can nevertheless withstand or adapt to winter, rain and drought.
- COMPOSITION:
The main components of thyme include thymol, linalool, anethole, borneol (present in the leaves) and carvacrol, as well as flavonoids, vitamin C, various amino acids, organic acids such as caffeic, oleanolic and ursolic acids, and minerals such as calcium, magnesium, iron and aluminium. These components are responsible for its many properties.
- COSMETIC PROPERTIES AND USES:
Thyme can provide many benefits for the condition and care of the skin. In particular, thanks to thymol, it helps to keep skin in good condition, regenerates it and prevents premature ageing. It also boosts elastin production, keeping skin toned and firming areas of sagging skin.
It also helps to eliminate acne by preventing the overproduction of oil in the skin and eliminating bacteria.
Another property is its ability to moisturise and repair very dry areas of skin, such as elbows, knees and heels, and to speed up healing during recovery from a wound caused by an injury or sudden impact. For this, its infusion can be applied to the wound to clean and disinfect its surface.
Thyme also offers multiple benefits for hair: it increases growth by improving scalp circulation, adds shine, strengthens the hair fibre and prevents hair loss. To achieve this, a thyme hair mask can be made by applying a tea or infusion directly to the hair and leaving it to rest.
- PRECAUTIONS
It is strictly prohibited at any stage of pregnancy, as it may stimulate uterine activity and cause miscarriage.
