• PLANT:

Vervain, Verbena officinalis, is a herbaceous plant native to Europe. It has lance-shaped leaves and small violet flowers. This plant belongs to the botanical family Labiatae. It is an invasive herb traditionally found in central and southern Europe.
It is a perennial plant that can grow easily in any soil. Its stem is straight and can reach almost a metre in height.
The leaves are irregularly lance-shaped, with lobes in colours ranging from pale lilac to deep purple, grouped in spikes, with the flower emerging between them.

• COMPOSITION:

This plant contains active constituents including flavonoids, glycosides, verbenalol, tannins and mucilage. Vervain also contains bitter principles, mainly found in its leaves and flowers.
Vervain also contains acids, with silicic acid and caffeic acid present in the highest concentrations.

• COSMETIC PROPERTIES AND USES:

Vervain improves joint pain, sprains, tendinitis, bruises, strains, etc. Apply vervain poultices or its infusion directly to the affected areas to help combat pain and inflammation.
It is also very beneficial in cases of stress, helping to improve anxiety.
Another benefit is the improvement of skin conditions such as eczema, boils or burns by applying the infusion directly, as a poultice or in compresses.
Gargling with vervain infusion can also prevent tooth decay and improve oral health, thanks to its antibiotic properties, which help to eliminate bacteria in the mouth.
Finally, it is worth highlighting its strong antioxidant effect, as its composition includes methanol and caffeic acid.

• PRECAUTIONS

Its use is contraindicated in pregnant women and children under 12 years of age.
The consumption of vervain is also not indicated for people with hypothyroidism.
