Description

  • PLANT:

Mullein, Verbascum thapsus, grows wild among rocks, in woodland, meadows, mountains and waste ground. It is a variety in the Scrophulariaceae family.
Mullein has been given many names. In some regions, it is called oreja de lobo, rabasco, candelario, matapeces, candela regia, hierba del parto and escobizo, among others.
This plant has large oval leaves covered in fine hairs and yellow flowers grouped in clusters. The herb is native to Asia and Europe and has traditionally been used in home remedies because of mullein's medicinal properties.

  • COMPOSITION:

The main components of mullein include saponin, veratric acid, catapol, verbascoside, iridoids and harpagide, among others, which have very specific applications.
Aucubin is antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and diuretic; verbascoside is analgesic, antihypertensive and antifungal, while catapol is laxative and purgative.
It is also rich in minerals such as magnesium, calcium, potassium, phosphorus, iron, sodium, tin and zinc, among others, which are vital for blood and cell formation, blood glucose control, the elimination of free radicals and other bodily functions.

  • COSMETIC PROPERTIES AND USES:

Applying mullein externally and locally in poultices, oil or an infusion used as an external tonic can relieve minor burns, boils, chilblains, wounds, ulcers, eczema, itching, dermatitis, insect bites, etc.
It can also relieve haemorrhoids when used in baths or poultices and improve oral health through rinsing with its infusion.
