Description

Chicory (Cichorium intybus) is a perennial plant with a long root, toothed leaves and flowers ranging from bluish to violet. It can sometimes be confused with dandelion because of its similar appearance. It has been cultivated since the seventeenth century for its roots as a coffee substitute; these are highly versatile and can be very useful when making natural, homemade remedies.
It belongs to the Asteraceae family and has African and Asian origins, although it is now cultivated in more regions. It grows mainly in warm climates and flowers in summer.

This plant is valued for its high mineral content, including iron, calcium, phosphorus and potassium, as well as vitamins (particularly groups A, B, C and K), which give it antioxidant properties against free radicals. Chicory is also rich in water, fibre, starch and chicoric acid, which gives it its distinctive bitter taste.
This plant is also rich in tannins, which are disinfectant and astringent molecules.

Chicory leaves and roots are used to prepare face creams and to combat skin redness. It is also beneficial for strengthening hair. Applying compresses soaked in chicory infusion is a natural, homemade remedy for soothing skin irritation and alleviating acne.
