Description

Blackcurrant is an aromatic deciduous shrub growing up to two metres tall, found in the Alps and northern Europe. Its leaves are large, with five distinct lobes.

Particularly notable components, present in high concentrations, include linoleic and α-linolenic acid, both essential fatty acids. These are compounds that the human body cannot produce naturally.
A lack of essential fatty acids in the skin can cause flaking, irritation and dryness.

Another fatty acid that is very uncommon in vegetable oils but present in this one is stearidonic acid, which, together with linoleic acid, is responsible for its anti-inflammatory properties. Alongside γ-linolenic acid, it also forms an exceptional combination for skin that is sagging, dull or drawn due to a lack of elastin.
As a polyunsaturated fatty acid, it is more readily absorbed by the skin, making this what is known as a dry oil and producing the effect known as “porcelain skin”.
Linoleic acid also helps the skin's natural exfoliation process and regulates sebum, benefiting acne-prone skin.
Finally, it is widely used in anti-ageing creams as an excellent antioxidant, and for sensitive or allergy-prone skin because of its anti-inflammatory and histamine-regulating properties.
