Description

Botanical name: Cannabis sativa - Family: Cannabaceae - Genus: Cannabis
First classified in 1735 by the Swedish botanist Carl Linnaeus,7 the plant has stems with opposite leaves at the base and alternate leaves elsewhere, palmately compound in form with free or persistent stipules. Wind-pollinated, unisexual flowers, monoecious or dioecious; small, in cymose inflorescences.
The male inflorescences are branched, panicle-like and many-flowered. The flowers are staminate, with 5 sepals, 5 stamens opposite the sepals, triporate pollen, rarely 2, 4, 6 porate.
The female flowers are more compact, pistillate, with a short, membranous, tubular calyx enclosing the ovary, with 2 joined carpels forming a unilocular ovary with 2 elongated stigmas; solitary, anatropous ovules.
