Description

Zanthoxylum essential oil (Tomar Seeds) is a rare oil originating from China and northern India. With its almost floral aroma, it is frequently used in perfumery and cosmetics. Zanthoxylum armatum is a tree whose seeds, first dried in the sun, are steam-distilled to produce this wonderful essential oil.

Its distinctive spicy, woody, peppery and floral aroma has made it notable since ancient times.

Ayurvedic medicine includes it in toothpaste (Dabur Red) for its antiseptic potential and ability to combat unpleasant odours.

Social and ethnic groups in the Uttaranchal Himalaya use Zanthoxylum armatum in medicine, food and barter, and regard it as religiously important.

As with hemp, every part of this tree, including its fruit, bark, stem and fresh leaves, is used for a wide variety of purposes. For example, a decoction extracted from its bark, fruit or seeds is traditionally used as an aromatic tonic for cholera and fever.

Appearance: Clear liquid, colourless to pale yellow

Solubility: Insoluble in water

Precautions

Not for use by pregnant women or children. People with sensitive skin should take care as it may cause irritation; they should not use it in baths or massages.

Do not apply directly to the skin. Dilute in a carrier oil or follow the recommended usage rate for creams and other cosmetics. This rate should be 1% or 2% at most.
