Description
Ylang Ylang Extra Essential Oil is obtained during the first fraction of steam distillation of fresh Cananga odorata var. genuina flowers, in the first 30 to 60 minutes. Immediately after picking, the delicate ylang flowers are taken to a still strategically located among the vegetation to minimise the time between harvesting and distillation.
"Extra" is the most volatile and aromatically rich fraction, and therefore the most valued in both perfumery and premium natural cosmetics.
The flowers are hand-picked at dawn in tropical areas of Madagascar to preserve their aromatic content. Distillation takes place in successive fractions: Extra, Complete (Totum), then fractions I, II and III.
Differences Between Ylang Ylang Types
- Ylang Ylang Extra essential oil contains only the first fraction, rich in Linalool (20% ±5%), Benzyl Acetate (15% ±3%) and p-Cresyl methyl ether (13% ±3%), with an intense, exotic and complex floral scent.
- Ylang Ylang Totum, by contrast, combines fractions I, II and III without the Extra fraction. Its typical composition includes Linalool (14% ±5%), Geraniol (11% ±3%) and Farnesol (7% ±3%), giving a balanced, more rounded floral profile.
- Ylang Ylang III is the lowest grade because it contains the final distillation fraction, with a composition shifting towards Germacrene D (12% ±3%), β Caryophyllene (10% ±3%) and α Farnesene (8% ±2%), producing an earthy, spicy and somewhat heavier scent.
This natural chemical development during distillation explains the marked differences between the types of Ylang Ylang.
Extra is the most volatile, complex and floral fraction, while fraction III is denser and less bright in aroma, used mainly in soap making or products where scent refinement is less important.Appearance: Clear liquid, dark yellow to orange
Solubility: Soluble in alcohol and oil
