Description
Yarrow Essential Oil (Achillea millefolium) is obtained by distilling the fresh flowering tops.
During this process, certain sesquiterpene compounds, including achillicin and traces of matricin, are thermally transformed into chamazulene, responsible for its intense blue colour and part of its recognised soothing and balancing properties in cosmetic formulations.
Its aroma is intense, herbaceous-floral, slightly sweet and balsamic, with nuances reminiscent of high-quality blue chamomile but deeper and more resinous.
Its deep, balancing scent makes it highly valued in diffuser blends and massage combinations intended to harmonise the emotional state or promote relaxation.
Rich in chamazulene, it is often combined with Lavender, Blue Chamomile, Frankincense, Cedarwood or Vetiver oils, creating a particularly serene aromatic blend.Always use diluted, as with any essential oil. Here are some application examples:
- Massage: dilute to 1 % in a carrier oil such as almond, macadamia or grapeseed.
- Diffusion: 1–2 drops combined with Lavender or Frankincense to create a calm, balsamic atmosphere.
Cosmetic Uses
Yarrow Essential Oil is valued in soothing, regenerating and balancing formulations, particularly products for sensitive, combination or redness-prone skin.
Its chamazulene and oxygenated sesquiterpene content makes it useful in:
- After-sun creams and balms.
- Soothing and balancing serums or masks.
- Preparations for areas with redness or mild irritation.
- Aromacosmetic products for night-time use or skin well-being.
- For formulation, an indicative dosage of 0,1 % - 0,5 % of the total cosmetic preparation is recommended.
Storage and Stability
Chamazulene is photosensitive and may oxidise over time, causing colour variations without significantly affecting the product's aromatic or technical quality.
Keep tightly closed, protected from light and heat, preferably below 25 °C.
Precautions
- For external use only.
- Avoid direct, undiluted application.
- Do not use during pregnancy or in children under 6 years of age.
- Do not apply to mucous membranes or occluded areas.
- Always respect the recommended dosages in cosmetic or aromatic formulations.
