Description

Low-density sodium carbonate, also known as soda ash, has the chemical formula Na2CO3. It is a synthetically produced white crystalline substance used in a wide range of applications, including glass production (helping reduce the melting temperature and improve glass properties), detergents and cleaning products (as a cleaning agent in laundry and dishwashing detergents), water treatment (adjusting pH and reducing acidity in wastewater and drinking water), the chemical industry (as a raw material for calcium carbonate, sodium bicarbonate and sodium silicate production), and many cosmetic uses.

Uses of Sodium Carbonate

Detergency:

Sodium carbonate is widely used in the detergent and cleaning product industry. It acts as an alkalising agent and increases cleaner effectiveness by improving their ability to remove dirt and stains. By increasing water pH, sodium carbonate helps dissolve fatty substances and proteins, making it a key ingredient in laundry detergents, dishwasher products and multipurpose cleaners.

Soap Making:

In soap making, sodium carbonate is used to adjust pH and improve soaps' cleaning performance. It increases the alkalinity of soap solutions, improving their ability to remove grease and dirt from the skin. It can also act as a stabiliser to extend the shelf life of soap products.

Cosmetics:

In cosmetics, sodium carbonate has various applications. It can regulate pH in skin and hair care products. It is also used in shampoo and conditioner formulations to help remove residue build-up and improve hair appearance and texture. Sodium carbonate may also be found in oral care products such as toothpastes, where it helps remove plaque and promote a healthier mouth.

Precautions for Use:

  • Wear gloves and safety goggles when handling sodium carbonate, particularly in powder form, to avoid direct contact with skin and eyes.
  • Adequate ventilation: work in well-ventilated areas when using sodium carbonate to avoid inhaling dust or vapours.
  • Safe storage: keep sodium carbonate in a tightly closed container, out of children's reach and away from heat sources or flames.

pH Level:

Sodium carbonate is alkaline and therefore has a high pH. Its pH is generally between 11 and 12 in an aqueous solution. Bear this in mind when using products containing sodium carbonate, as high concentrations may irritate skin and eyes. Dilute it appropriately in cosmetic formulations and follow the recommended instructions for use.
