• PLANT:

Orthosiphon stamineus is known as “Java tea” or “cat's whiskers” because of the slender, elongated appearance of its stamens. It is a perennial plant native to the tropical regions of South-East Asia, although it is present in many Asian countries, from Myanmar to Indonesia, including the Philippines.
In herbal medicine, only orthosiphon leaves are used, harvested shortly before flowering.
Its leaves have been used for therapeutic purposes for centuries, and in traditional medicine they were used particularly to combat kidney disorders and heart conditions.

• COMPOSITION:

Its composition includes potassium salts, up to 3%; essential oil, present at between 0,2 and 0,6 mL/kg, rich in sesquiterpene hydrocarbons and free triterpenes; and phenolic compounds such as lipophilic flavones at 0,4 to 0,5%, including sinensetin, eupatorin, salvigenin, rhamnazin, ladanein, cirsimaritin and tetramethoxyflavone.
It also contains caffeine esters, accounting for between 0,5 and 1%, including rosmarinic acid, diacetyl tartaric acid and lithospermic acid derivatives, and chromenes such as methylripariochromene.

The action of polyphenols and flavonoids can increase the human body's resistance to oxidative stress and make certain molecules and vitamins more effective within the body by allowing them to last longer.
This plant is a natural diuretic that improves the body's processes against premature ageing.
It can also be used to relax the joints and improve the symptoms of pain and sharp sensations in the knees and hands that occur during periodic attacks of this condition.
