Description

There are numerous types of thyme. The most common is Thymus vulgaris. It is a small woody plant that grows in sunny regions.

Thyme illustrates the concept of chemical races particularly well. Depending on the region where it grows and the environmental conditions, this plant has its own biochemical identity expressed through various chemotypes (linalool, thymol, thujanol, para-cymene, geraniol, carvacrol, etc.).
Thyme has been referred to as a medicinal and even magical plant since antiquity.
In Egypt, it was used with many other plants for embalming. According to some sources, the name “Thymus” may derive from the Egyptian word tham, the name given to the plant. Other sources link it to the Greek word thymos, meaning smoke or perfume; thyme, like other aromatic plants, was often burned to dispel unpleasant smells or evil spirits.
Another possible origin of the name is the Greek word Thymus, meaning “courage” or “valour”. Roman soldiers apparently bathed with thyme to increase their vigour. In the Middle Ages, knights chose thyme for the same reason.
