Description

Fennel is native to the Mediterranean basin. It has been known as a medicinal and aromatic plant since antiquity. Its fame and popularity reached China and India, where it is consumed very regularly. It appears in very old Egyptian writings and is mentioned in mythological accounts.
The Greeks called it “marathron”, referring to a fennel field where the famous battle between the Greeks and Persians took place in 490 BC. This was where Pheidippides set off for Athens to announce the Greek victory, a task he completed at the cost of his life. Fennel is therefore associated with victory and success and gave its name to the famous sporting event we call the Marathon.

Fennel's medicinal properties were described by Theophrastus, Dioscorides, Hippocrates and the great Hildegard von Bingen. These authors agreed in attributing digestive, emmenagogue and diuretic properties to the plant.

Regarding the essential oil obtained, it is important to distinguish two types of fennel and essential oil. Bitter fennel, Foenicululum vulgare var vulgare, and sweet fennel, Foenicululum vulgare var vulgare, have somewhat different compositions. The essential oil extracted from the dulcis variety has a considerably higher anethole percentage.

In aromatherapy, we generally favour the dulcis variety.
