Cinnamon essential oil
Cinnamon is an evergreen tree native to the East, growing 10 to 15 metres tall. Its inner bark, obtained by peeling and rubbing the branches, is used as a spice. It is grown in Sri Lanka, India and other parts of the world, including across South Asia.
Properties
The properties of the essential oil depend on the species and the part used for extraction, with Ceylon cinnamon being the most common. The essential oil extracted from the leaves is more economical and almost entirely lacks the component that gives cinnamon its character, cinnamaldehyde (the natural component responsible for cinnamon’s characteristic flavour and scent).
In aromatherapy we recommend Ceylon cinnamon extracted from the bark, or Cassia cinnamon, reserving Ceylon cinnamon leaf oil for soap making.
