Description

Nutmeg, along with pepper and clove, is a spice with a long history. The nut comes from a large tree native to the Moluccas. It reached Europe in the Middle Ages through Arab trade, but in the XVI century the Portuguese took control of the island, although not for long: the trade soon passed into Dutch hands. They wanted an absolute monopoly over this spice and went so far as to destroy the tree on other islands to achieve it. Stealing it was severely punished.
Apart from its culinary uses, it was valued for its medicinal properties, particularly its digestive and stimulating action.
In the Middle Ages it was used in an attempt to eliminate unpleasant smells in the streets. Earlier, the Egyptians had already included it alongside other aromatic plants in preparations for embalming the dead.
The essential oil is extracted from the nut and also from the covering around it (mace).
