Hydrolats are the aqueous phase obtained during the distillation of aromatic plant material. They contain aromatic substances in a proportion that varies with the plant and the process: there is no universal concentration of 1%.

Trade names can be confusing. A floral water may be a hydrolat or a preparation with a different composition. To distinguish them, check the production method and the INCI of each product.

Preservatives and composition

A hydrolat may be sold with or without added preservatives. Our shop stocks both forms, so you should not assume that a product is preservative-free simply because it is called a hydrolat. Waters obtained by hydroalcoholic extraction may also contain residual alcohol.

Microfiltration and storage

Microfiltration through membranes helps remove particles and reduce microbial contamination. It does not justify claiming that every product is sterile, nor does it alone guarantee a particular shelf life after opening.

Store each product according to its label, observe the stated batch and date, and avoid contaminating the container during use. When it is incorporated into a cream or another preparation, the preservation and stability of the complete formula must be validated.
