Description

Gluconolactone is also known as glucono delta lactone. Based on its chemical structure, it is a polyhydroxy acid (PHA). It is also called a next-generation AHA. It is an ester of gluconic acid or a dry form of gluconic acid. It is found in honey, fermented products, wine and fruit juices. Gluconic acid is a by-product of glucose metabolism. When the aldehyde in a glucose molecule is converted into an acid, gluconic acid is produced; when gluconic acid loses a water molecule from its structure, gluconolactone forms. This makes them interconnected. When added to water, Gluconolactone immediately converts into gluconic acid. It comes as a white, crystalline, odourless powder.

Gluconolactone is used as a humectant in many products because it has multiple hydroxyl groups. These groups attract water and hold it for the skin when applied. It also shrinks skin cells, making pores appear smaller, like lactic acid or citric acid (AHA). Hydrated skin looks smoother, and the contraction helps eliminate fine lines and wrinkles. It acts as an antioxidant against harmful oxidative reactions and free radicals, preventing important molecules in the skin’s structure from changing. Otherwise, damage to the skin’s structure leads to a defective epidermis and rough skin. When a product contains antioxidants, its stability improves. Gluconolactone is also non-irritating for sensitive skin. It has the lowest potential for sensitivity. In formulations, it is also used to adjust the solution’s pH. Because its structure contains many -OH groups, it has more scope to replace other groups, as the -OH group is considered the most reactive, making it a chelating agent. It is used to formulate mouthwashes, cleansers, hair care products, skin care products and bath products.
