Description

Behentrimonium Chloride is a plant-derived cationic conditioner obtained from behenic acid, known for its strong affinity with the hair fibre and its ability to markedly improve combability, shine and softness. Its long-chain structure (C22) binds effectively to the hair cuticle, creating a silky feel, controlling frizz and reducing static without heavy build-up through continued use. Alongside conditioning, it acts as a primary emulsifier, adding body and stability to masks and conditioners without requiring other emulsifiers, making high-performance professional formulations easier.

This ingredient offers significant technical advantages: excellent substantivity on hair, a soft, slippery finish, effective frizz control, pronounced lubricity, and visibly improved shine and manageability in dry, damaged or chemically treated hair. Its cationic nature makes it ideal for slightly acidic conditions, normally between pH 4 and 6, where conditioning performance is greatest and interaction with the hair fibre most stable.

Its incompatibilities must be considered: it should not be combined with anionic surfactants or negatively charged polymers, which can neutralise its action or destabilise the formula. It is, however, fully compatible with non-ionic and amphoteric surfactants and fatty alcohols such as cetearyl alcohol, with which it forms classic self-emulsifying systems used in premium hair treatments. It is commonly used in rinse-out and leave-in conditioners, hair masks, damaged-hair repair products, post-chemical-treatment formulas and children's products.

For formulation, incorporate it into the melted oil phase, usually between 70 and 75 °C, at concentrations from 0,5% to 5%, depending on the desired conditioning intensity and product type. Once formulated, store in a cool, dry place, protected from moisture, to preserve stability and physicochemical properties.

How to Use / Incorporate

  1. Weigh the required quantity of Behentrimonium Chloride.
  2. Add it to the oils/butters (oil phase).
  3. Melt in a bain-marie or heater with cetearyl alcohol or another co-emulsifier, if used.
  4. Heat the aqueous phase separately.
  5. When both phases are at the same temperature, pour the aqueous phase into the oil phase while mixing.
  6. Blend until emulsified, then stir gently as it cools.

The expected final pH is between 4,0 and 5,5. Hair conditions better in acidic conditions, and this ingredient performs better within that range.
If the pH is high (above 6), effectiveness may decrease, hair may feel less soft and the emulsion may be less stable. Adjust the final pH with lactic or citric acid if needed.

General dosage: 0,5% to 5%. By product type:

  • Light conditioners: 0,5% to 1%
  • Regular conditioner: 2% to 3%
  • Intensive hair mask: 3% to 5%.
  • Leave-in / no-rinse: 0,3% to 0,8%.

Important: Processing Temperature

Incorporate into the oil phase at 70ºC to 75ºC. If it is not heated sufficiently, it will not dissolve properly and the emulsion may separate.

Compatibility / Incompatibilities

Compatible ingredients:

  • Oils and butters
  • Cetearyl alcohol (highly recommended for texture).
  • Non-ionic surfactants
  • Amphoteric surfactants (such as coco-betaine in creams/2-in-1 products)

Incompatible Ingredients:

  • ❌ Anionic surfactants (SLS, SLES, liquid soaps, SCI, SCS, etc.)
  • These ingredients may inactivate it or cause the mixture to split.

Other Relevant Technical Information:

  • Naturality Index (ISO 16128-1:2018): 0,74
  • Appearance: white to yellow solid.
  • Cationic activity: 69% to 75%

Precautions

Keep out of reach of children. Store in a cool, dry place.
