Description
Refined (formulated) Shea Butter is an exact copy of the natural product, made from 100% plant-based raw materials. Like assembling a puzzle, the manufacturer uses a base of pure butter and reconstitutes it with glyceride fats and oils.
Unlike adulterated products of unknown composition, these formulated products have a pharmacopoeia-approved sterol profile, so their INCI, CAS and EINECS are exactly the same as the original product.
Formulated products are much more stable and resistant to rancidity than originals because they lack the characteristic volatile compounds. They have a fatty acid profile, texture and cosmetic performance identical to the original at a much lower price. However, natural antioxidants, flavonoids and other beneficial compounds are present at much lower levels than in the original, and may be absent after refining. They remain a very good option, for example, for natural caustic-soda soaps or products requiring greater stability.
Formulated products have always been present in the industry, and you may have bought them several times without realising it, as this information is often concealed to sell a substitute as “100% natural”.

It is important not to confuse refined (formulated) products with conventionally refined products, particularly organic ones. No formulated product can carry organic certification.
