Formulated Cocoa Butter - Chips

A formulated product that imitates cocoa butter: it provides the same hardness and consistency in bars, balms and soap, with an equivalent fatty acid profile. It is not cocoa butter, and we make that clear when selling it.

Description

Formulated Cocoa Butter - Chips

We bought this product as conventional deodorised cocoa butter, but it is not. On receiving and working with it, we found that it is a formulated product: an imitation of cocoa butter made from other fats, adjusted to reproduce its behaviour. We sell it for what it is.

It is not the same raw material as our organic cocoa butters, whether in chips, blocks or raw first-pressed form.

How to recognise a formulated product

Formulated products are very common on the market. With cocoa butter, there are three telltale signs: the name (it is often simply called "cocoa butter", without an origin or certification), the appearance (colour is often added to imitate cocoa) and, above all, the taste: genuine cocoa butter, even when deodorised, retains a faint trace of cocoa; formulated versions have no taste.

What it does

We have worked with it and it behaves like cocoa butter:

  • Adds consistency and hardness to lip balms, bars and soaps.

  • Forms a protective film that helps retain moisture in dry skin.

  • Fatty acid profile equivalent to that of cocoa butter.

  • Resistant to rancidity.

Use in formulations

  • Lip balms and bars: 5 - 100%.

  • Lotions and creams: 5 - 20%.

  • Soap, to add hardness: 5 - 20%.

  • Hair conditioners: 1 - 5%.

  • Oil phase. The chips make it easy to weigh the exact amount: melt at the lowest possible temperature, stirring gently, and incorporate as soon as liquid.

INCI and technical data

We are analysing the product so that we can declare its actual INCI. Until we have the result, we will not publish INCI, CAS or EINECS: those for cocoa butter do not apply, and we will not provide incorrect information. If you need this information to notify your cosmetic product, contact us before buying.

In the meantime, we provide reference values, which is only fair: genuine cocoa butter, even refined, has a saponification value of 188 - 200 mg KOH/g, an iodine value of 33 - 42, a maximum acid value of 3,0 and a maximum peroxide value of 3,0, and retains a faint cocoa odour and a characteristic mild taste. We will publish this product's values here as soon as we have them, whatever the results.

Storage: keep the container tightly closed in a cool, dry place, protected from light and heat.

If you are looking for cocoa butter, this is not it. We have our own cocoa butters for that, and describe them in the same way: as what they are.
