Description
Menthol crystals occur in the oils of certain mint species, mainly Mentha arvensis and peppermint, although synthetic menthol is generally used because it is much cheaper.
Our Menthol is 100% Natural, extracted from peppermint.
A waxy crystalline substance, transparent or white, solid at room temperature, with an exceptionally fresh mint scent.
It melts at around 40ºC.
Insoluble in water, very soluble in alcohol, chloroform, ether and benzine, and very soluble in glacial acetic acid, liquid paraffin, and fixed and volatile oils. Its properties make it widely used in many industries.
Topical application produces a cooling sensation by stimulating the “cold receptors”.
Properties and Uses of Menthol
An agent with antiseptic, local analgesic, anti-inflammatory, anti-itch, cooling and refreshing effects.
Applied to the skin, it produces a rubefacient effect, followed by a cooling sensation and then local analgesic action. It is therefore used to relieve itching in various forms of dermatitis and eczema associated with itching, including urticaria, anal itching, insect bites, jaundice and vaginal infection. It is also used to soothe muscle and joint pain and is beneficial in treatments for arthritis, rheumatism and sprains.
It can be used in perfumes, cosmetics, balms, ointments, gels, sprays, shampoos, conditioners, creams, liniments, lotions, solutions and powders.
Contraindications
- Children under 2 years of age.
- Application to open wounds and mucous membranes.
- During pregnancy and breastfeeding, topical use only and not for prolonged periods.
- Avoid simultaneous use with analgesic creams or treatments containing rubefacient medicines.
Recommended Amount
Topical Use
- 0´1-2% for dermatitis and eczema associated with itching, insect bites...
- 10% for bruises, strains, sprains, rheumatic pain, arthritis...
- Topical cosmetics: 0´1-2%.
To incorporate it into products, ideally dissolve the crystals first in a little alcohol.

Precautions
