Magnesium Chloride Hexahydrate

Description

It is found mainly in nuts, whole grains and green vegetables.

Also known as Bischofite or magnesium salt, it is applied dissolved in water to form what is commonly called magnesium oil.
This oil is prepared by dissolving it in lukewarm or cold water until the product precipitates: the water can no longer dissolve any more salt, which remains undissolved at the bottom.

It consists of white, odourless crystals.

Very soluble in water and readily soluble in 96% ethanol.

Properties and Uses of Magnesium Chloride Hexahydrate

Among other uses, it can be used to make a cleansing milk for oily and/or acne-prone skin.

This oil is applied to disinfect the skin and also acts as an anti-inflammatory.

Side Effects

As a concentrated magnesium oil, it may cause irritation. If this occurs, dilute it to reduce the concentration.

Precautions

• Do not overheat; 20-25ºC (lukewarm water) at most. At the boiling point of water, this salt decomposes into oxychlorides, and at temperatures above 110ºC it will form magnesium compounds and HCl vapour
• Avoid spills into surface watercourses or bodies of water and/or infiltration into shallow groundwater.
• Store in tightly closed containers, protected from light and moisture.
