Description
Tetraclinis articulata is a member of the cypress family that is very common in North Africa. In classical antiquity, it formed extensive forests.
In Spain, specifically in the Cartagena region, there is a population of Tetraclinis articulata on the European mainland.
In Egypt, it was used for embalming. Its wood is highly valued in cabinetmaking and marquetry, where it is known as Alerce. The resin, known as sandarac, has been used as incense and in adhesives for glass and porcelain.
There is little agreement on its common name. In Maghreb countries, it is often called Araar, although this name is also used for other members of the cypress family. In France, it is called Barbary thuja or Callitris; in Spain, Sabina mora or alerce.
Since the XVII century, this tree has been called the “tree of life” because of its various health benefits. Its antimicrobial and antifungal properties are well known. Studies of the essential oil have reported antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and antifungal properties. However, the oil is little known or used in aromatherapy.
The resin, sandarac, is used as incense and has a pleasant balsamic aroma.

Maravilloso.
