Description
A substance very abundant in nature, it is the main component of rocks, snail shells, pearls, shells, eggshells and the skeletons of many other organisms.
It forms part of geological and organically formed limestone structures, such as calcareous tufa, speleothems, stromatolites and oncolites.
It is also the main component of many structures in living organisms, such as the thallus of certain algae and molluscan shells.
It is a white or almost white powder, virtually insoluble in water, although its water solubility increases in the presence of carbon dioxide and ammonium salts.
Uses and Properties of Calcium Carbonate
It can be used to make cleaning products thanks to its abrasive effects.
It retains moisture in preparations, adds consistency and improves cleaning performance.
It is also used in exfoliating preparations.
It can also be incorporated into pressed powders, translucent powders, eyeshadows and even talcum powders.
It is an essential ingredient in toothpastes, as it does not damage enamel.
It can be used to make talcum powders, make-up products, toothpastes, creams, soaps and gels...
Recommended Dosage
- Topical use: 3-10%.

- High doses may cause hypercalcaemia and alkalosis, which resolve when the doses are reduced.
Precautions
- Store in tightly closed containers protected from light.
- Ingestion may aggravate the condition in patients with calcium kidney stones.
